Meet Beth Hammond
What is your job title and how long have you been working in hearing healthcare?
I am a state-licensed Hearing Instrument Specialist. I started in the industry 19 years ago as a Patient Care Coordinator but quickly realized I had finally found a job that spoke to my heart. I became a licensed specialist shortly thereafter.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most are the personal relationships I develop with many of my patients and their families. A bittersweet example of this is the time I received a thank-you card from the family of a recently deceased patient. The family thanked me for attending his services, but they more so wanted to thank me for giving them their father back during the last two years of his life. They had not been able to communicate with him for years. I had been able to give him good speech understanding and the family said it meant the world to them. That warmed my heart and it cemented my belief that better hearing is vitally important and invaluable.
Tell us about your family.
My first blessing in this world was being born to John Ed and Opal May Hammond – the perfect parents for me. I have 3 adult children and 9 incredible grandchildren.
Tell us about one of your favorite things.
My favorite movie of ALL TIME is a precious little romantic comedy, “Fools Rush In”. I love it because of the humor and sweetness… and at the end it shows that even through trials and tribulations, love can conquer all. As a bonus, not one, but TWO Elvis Presley songs are part of the soundtrack!
Do you have any awards or accomplishments you would like to highlight?
I joined the Navy when I was 28 years old. I was meritoriously advanced out of boot camp to the next rank for completing basic training in the top 5%. I went to two Navy training centers and graduated number 1 in my class from both.
When I was 51 I decided to start training for a 5K run. Here’s the thing, I had a short stride and had NEVER been a runner. I ended up losing 40 pounds and completed the run. I even got a medal to prove it! The next year, I was able to complete a 10K run. I then set my sights on a full marathon – a goal my son laughed at! I knew right then and there I would make it across the finish line – and I’m proud to say I did!
